It’s no April Fools joke.  Malcolm is headed off on another shaping excursion for approximately the first half of April.  The port of call is UWL Workshop in La Rochelle France.

The exact dates will be posted soon.  Malcolm is looking forward to creating a new batch of Bonzers with Renaud, Thomas, Benoit, Josslin and the UWL crew.  We will be also getting a special assist from Tristan Mausse and Paul Lefevre, aka. The Lucky Bastards.

The high quality of  workmanship at UWL ensures that the boards Malcolm shapes will not only look beautiful, but will be strong as well.  It is very important to us, with troublesome economies and the cost of surfboards these days, that our boards are durable and provide enjoyment for the longest possible time. This years boards should be “the best batch yet”.

Daniel And Mikala Jones have put in a lot of quality time on the Bonzers over the last few years demonstrating the potential of the boards.  They also have been very generous in sharing images with us, both video and stills.  A 16mm film by Jeremy Rumas called Hangs Upon Nothing which features some Bonzer surfing is currently in production. We are looking forward to not only that footage but the entire film itself which promises to be a project of very high quality. 2011 marks the 40th year for the Bonzer, and we are pleased to announce that we are headed back to Europe and England to continue the “Bonzer Project”. Forty years on, and interest in our work continues to grow. It truly has been a long, strange and wonderful trip.

Malcolm will be in France working with the amazing crew a UWL Workshop from approximately April 10th to the 20th. Renaud and Thomas Cardinal have kindly invited us back for a second round. Following France he will off to Manila Surfboard Design in Portugal to shape from about April 21st to the 30th. This is our third year working with Manila. His factory produces top quality surfboards. We are fortunate to be able to work with Manila and provide Bonzers in Portugal and Spain. After Portugal it’s back home for 6 weeks. Then it’s off to ‘jolly old England’ in mid June. This has become an annual pilgrimage. Lots of work, a million laughs, and the daily evening ritual of a pint and a half at the pub. Malcolm can still only handle two pints on occasion. The exact dates are still to be determined. Malcolm says…

There is no way I have the verbal acuity to express the depth of my feelings about the life, music and passing of Don Van Vliet, “Captian Beefheart”.  Tom Waits’ quote pretty much says it all for me.

It is impossible for me to overstate the influence he has had on me. Simply put; within the context of my life and consciousness there is no Bonzer I have ever shaped that is separate from Beefheart. The sound he created is infused in my genes. As Tom Waits says, “He’s gone and he won’t be back,” but as ‘The Captain’ says in the song Kandy Korn, “be reborn.” Creativity, the joys of observation, and reverence for all living things will be sparked and reborn in all those who truly ‘feel’ his music and words.

Duncan says…

Since 1970 he has been a part of me, completely infused. When we saw him at the Roxy in 74-75 I remember sitting right in front on the stage with Malcolm, Dr. Robert, Charly, and the rest of the Bonzer Gang. Charly brought a pad and pens to draw pictures of the Magic Band. During intermission we handed the Captain a stack of Charly’s drawings. His reply – ‘Thanks you for your presents, and your presence.’

Well, same to you Captain, ‘Thank you for your presents, and your presence.’ He shined like a million suns, now he’s gone. Somebody light a god damn match!
