Happy New Year
2008
Let’s turn the eight of 2008 on its side, and manifest the infinite
potential and beauty of human existence, which shines within the
struggle for individual and world Peace. Now is, and always will be,
the time to begin.
Peace is not merely the absence of war, anger and strife. Peace is
the presence of compassion, freedom, justice, and love. Unfortunately
these are not always naturally occurring substances within the paradigm
of human consciousness. The reason I refer to, ‘the struggle for peace’,
is because by thinking of Peace as the absence of things, rather the
presence of things, it initiates a condition of passiveness rather than
action. Creating Peace requires mental and physical activity, and most
importantly it, demands the cultivation of empathy.
empathy, n. 1. intellectual identification with, or vicarious
experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another person.
Our world is an extremely complicated place. It is filled with
exquisite beauty, and incredible pain and unrest. A culture of fear is
being propagated via the 24 hour news cycle, as well as, by many of
our political, social and religious institutions. This promotes a
tendency to withdraw into our personal safety zones, and become self
absorbed. We must resist this temptation and turn the monster on it’s
head. Empathy is a vehicle of positive engagement toward creating an
environment of Peace and Justice. Understanding and feeling the pain and
pleasure of others can be emotionally exhausting. But all it takes to
light the way, is the spark of unconditional love, that resides within
this process. On this path we will begin dissolving the illusion of
skin encapsulated egos, and witness the transformation of ‘me to we’.
This is the key to creating a more peaceful world, and constructively
attacking problems as diverse as hunger, health care, education and
global warming.
Let’s fight the ‘good fight’. The next generation deserves nothing
less. As Yoko Ono said in a recent interview. “In the course of
survival, we do not have the luxury of being negative.”
